Do not wait see Dylan Minnette on your TV screens soon. The 13 reasons why The star opened up about his decision to leave his acting career to redirect his passion for music in a recent interview with Show Zach Sang.
“I've been very fortunate to find success in it,” Minnette said of acting. “We always worked a ton, and then I was 13 reasons whyand it was very popular and definitely culminated in what I had in acting.”
Minnette said the feverish attention he received from the star of the popular Netflix series began to change his perspective when the pressure of success lifted. “But it also started to feel like work. I was in a very lucky position, it was always fun for me, it was always really inspiring, but then it just started to feel like work.”
But Minnette doesn't necessarily plan on giving up acting forever. He said he still feels he has something to give artistically and creatively in areas outside of music — when the time is right. He planned to act last year, he said, “but that time frame was the actor's strike.”
Meanwhile, Minnette said he is “incredibly privileged” to switch career paths and is focused on fulfilling his “Wallows duties” as the band's lead singer.
“The Wallows and the music is this passion that we've always had as a team to really go as far as we can,” Minnette said. “I'm in a position now where I can do that for a while, and I feel it [to] take this as far as it can go, the only way it's going to happen is if I give it my 100% [of my] time and energy into it and take it very seriously.”
The Wallows released their third studio album, Modelon May 24. The alt-rock group, consisting of Minnette, Braeden Lemasters and Cole Preston, kicks off the album's US tour in August with stops in New York, LA, Las Vegas, Boston and San Diego, followed by a European tour with stops in Paris, Berlin and London.
In a recent Rolling rock interview following the album's announcement, Minnette said they hope it will be the “most accessible album” they've made.
“I want people to put it on if they're not really fans of us and be hooked right away,” he said. “We don't want to take very much of their attention, but we want to keep it. We keep them all the time and make them want to come back.”
