At its peak, 65 million people tuned into Netflix on Friday to watch Jake Paul and Mike Tyson fight, or however you want to describe it.
The streamer touted the audience as a “record-breaking night” in what was its largest live production to date. Overall, an estimated 60 million households worldwide watched Friday's main boxing event, which took place at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas, with viewership peaking at 65 million “simulcasts.” , according to Netflix. The preliminary bout between Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor also drew an impressive rating of 50 million viewers.
However, the Netflix live stream was not without its problems. Many viewers reported issues with buffering during the broadcast, while the fight between Paul, 27, and Tyson, 58, left much to be desired.
“This unprecedented scale created many technical challenges, which the launch team brilliantly addressed by prioritizing streaming stability for the majority of viewers,” Netflix CTO Elizabeth Stone said in a note to employees. “I'm sure many of you have seen the comments in the press and on social media about quality issues. “We don’t want to discount the bad experience of some members and we know we have room for improvement, but we still consider this event a great success.”
Netflix will broadcast two NFL games live on Christmas Day 2024, while WWE Raw will air live on the platform starting in January 2025.
