All awards shows are ridiculous, but this year the Emmy Awards, the highest honors in television, have a particularly ridiculous shine. Why is that? Well, there are numerous reasons, as we'll see below, but here's the biggest one: The 75th annual Emmy Awards were delayed until January 2024 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. This means that all shows and artists being recognized tonight come from an eligibility period that runs from June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023.
June 1, 2022, let's be honest, it feels like a very a long time ago. To put it in perspective, back then the US Supreme Court still believed that women had a constitutional right to bodily autonomy (which would end at the end of the month) and Elon Musk was still trying to sneak out of Twitter purchase. (Plus, Twitter was still called Twitter!) All like shows like Bear, The old man, Obi Wan Kenobiand even more were being transmitted.
I mean, it's a strange year for the Emmys, and tonight's awards may make things even stranger. Here's a breakdown of the main categories: who we think will win and who really deserves it.
Lead actor in a drama series
jeff bridges, The old man
Brian Cox, Succession
Kieran Culkin Succession
Bob Odenkirk Better call Saul
Peter Pascal, The last of us
jeremy strong, Succession
Should win: Bob Odenkirk Better call Saul
Will win: Kieran Culkin Succession
Why it's ridiculous this year: Beyond this being another confrontation between Better call Saul and Succession (where it's hard to imagine Culkin losing, especially after winning the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award this month)… What is Brian Cox doing here? Yes, actors have discretion over which categories they enter, but looking back Succession Season 4… Look, we have a Supporting Actor category for a reason!
Lead actress in a drama series
Sharon Horgan bad sisters
Melanie Lynskey yellow jackets
Elizabeth Moss, The Handmaid's Tale
beautiful ramsey, The last of us
Keri Russell The diplomat
sara snook, Succession
Should win: sara snook, Succession
Will win: sara snook, Succession
Why it's ridiculous this year: Sharon Horgan and Elisabeth Moss are nominated for shows that finished airing in October and November 2022, respectively. But in some ways, this is one of the most rational categories of the year, if only because the favorite is, honestly, the most deserving. These people all had powerful performances: Bella Ramsey would be my second runner-up and they should have at least one more chance to win once. The last of us Season 2 is complete.
