By now, Dua Lipa fans know that her new album is inspired by psychedelia with contributions from Tame Impala's Kevin Parker. In a new interview with Rolling StoneThe pop star delved into the influences on her upcoming third studio LP, including British artists Primal Scream and Massive Attack.
In the profile, R.S. Writer Brittany Spanos reports that Lipa described the album as a “psychedelic pop-infused tribute to UK rave culture” that draws heavily from Primal Scream and Massive Attack. Lipa named Primal Scream's 1991 breakout album, Madelica shoutsas a particular influence.
Other inspirations for the album include British pop legends such as Oasis and Blur, as well as '90s rock and electronic bands such as Moby and Gorillaz.
“This record feels a little more raw,” Lipa explained in the interview. “I want to capture the essence of youth and freedom, have fun and just let things happen, whether good or bad. You can't change it. You just have to roll with the punches of whatever is happening in your life.”
Lipa also opened up about her first meeting with Parker in July 2022. “I was really nervous because I'm a big Kevin fan,” she said, adding that Parker was “pretty shy at first.”
The initial introduction led to Lipa taking him to a session with her longtime collaborator Caroline Ailin, Danny L Harle (Caroline Polachek, Charli XCX) and Tobias Jesso Jr. (Adele, Niall Horan). Despite their seemingly disparate musical backgrounds, the group ended up making eight of the album's 11 tracks.
