Coi Leray is entering a new phase of her career as the 26-year-old welcomed her “grown-up and sexy” era to the baby for 2024.
The 'Players' rapper dropped her first single of the new year on Thursday (January 25), as she featured Ear Drummers veteran Mike Will Made-It on production for the catchy 'Wanna Come Thru'.
“This song is for me about my adult and sexy self. Grown up and sexy means being so in love with yourself – which is one of the sexiest, most mature, mature things a woman can do [be]. As you grow older and you tap into your womanhood and your femininity and I feel like you should embrace that,” she said in a statement.
“You feel good about yourself. looking in the mirror and just loving yourself. 2024 will be my adult and sexy time. I'm taking over this year. I have so much new music and a whole new side of me to get to know.”
Mike Will Made-It defended Coi's latest offering as a “culture-changing record.”
“The song is just fresh and progressive,” added the Atlanta producer. “What I like is that it sounds simple and easy to digest and immediately puts you in a mood. It's the best feeling ever to be able to create a song that makes the listener feel good. This is the #1 fasho, we have many more on the way. The Ear Drummer/Trendsetter Way.”
Coi Leray is also making a transition on the business side, having left Republic Records, where she has been signed since 2019, in favor of joining Island Records. “Wanna Come Thru” is her first Island release and there's plenty more in store for the rest of this year.
The New Jersey rapper parlayed her 2023 success into a pair of Grammy nominations, competing next month for best rap song (“Players”) and best pop/dance recording (“Baby Don't Hurt Me” ) categories.
