Brisbane-based indie pop singer/songwriter Asha Jefferies debuts 2021 EP The top and followed last year with a string of upbeat new singles teasing her forthcoming full-length album, Ego Ride. Jefferies describes the record as “…a story written and dedicated to my younger self, that the meter of your world will keep running and there is hope that it will”.
In that vein, the record's teaser tracks have split the difference between punchy pop melody and confessional vulnerability, featuring equal parts Olivia Rodrigo and Liz Phair. Jefferies says, These songs have a fundamentally 'together' feel made possible by the collaboration between my band and Sam Cromack (album producer and engineer, Ball Park Music). All the songs were recorded live together in one room, and the album's sound morphs from indie pop to piano ballad, psychedelic indie rock and folktronica.
Today, ahead of the album's release on April 12, Jeffires shares one last new single, “Stranger,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“Stranger” finds Jefferies delivering a smoldering, flame-lit ballad, hitting familiar tones and dramatic highs. The track opens drenched in strange keyboards and restrained percussion before later building into a haunting, guitar-laden finale, offering an emotional exorcism disguised as a powerful pop ballad. Meanwhile, Jefferies' vocals sound stark and vulnerable, with her lyrics exploring feeling trapped and disconnected, both in relationships and in herself: “My love sometimes I feel like a stranger / Inside me, in my body / When you hold me so close / Like a stranger
About the track, Asha says, “Stranger opens the album by channeling a lingering question – how can you know and share yourself with someone if you're never given the space to explore or question it? The song is about being lost and trapped in a relationship and deals with issues around codependency, identity, voice and the desire for freedom.”
