Swiftie Mom Sings Along With Taylor Swift During Awake Brain Surgery To Preserve Her Speech

A Taylor Swift fan made her own Eras tour in the surgery.

A 36-year-old mother named Selena Campione recently underwent an awake craniotomy to remove a brain tumor at the Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where Dr. Nitesh Patel preserved her speech during the operation using a technology called Quicktome Connectomics, which allowed the doctor to monitor Campione's speech and other areas of her brain to make sure they weren't interfering with the tumor removal.

Dr. Patel noted to Campione that singing is the best choice for the method. “Singing allows me to continuously monitor a patient's speech, rate and rhythm without the interruptions and pauses that occur during a conversation,” Patel said in a press release.

As a result, Campione decided her song of choice would be Swift's catalog. “My two daughters are huge Taylor Swift fans, as am I. I listen to her music 24 hours a day, in my car, in my house. I could sing with her on stage if she wanted,” he shared. “So it made sense to sing it during the operation. It helped me, I felt like my daughters were with me.”

According to Campione, during the operation, she sang songs from “22” and “Shake It Off” to “Style” and added that the operation was pleasant. “The nurses told me you'll have fun in the operating room with Dr. Patel. I was really like?' she remembered. “It was fantastic. I didn't feel a thing. The nurses were holding my hand, walking me through everything and singing with me. I even think I've turned the doctors into Swifties. You see them in one of the videos tapping to the beat with their tools ».

Campione is now a few months post-op and symptom free. “My daughters were with me throughout the operation. Knowing that they would sing with me, he drove me to the surgery,” he concluded. “Now my youngest daughter is telling her teacher that Taylor Swift was in surgery singing with me.”
