The Netflix reboot of the iconic series Good moments has garnered strong backlash, which was recently addressed by its host.
The he's got it's been a few weeks since the cartoon reboot Good moments hit Netflix and the public reaction overall was not pretty. The answers haven't been lost on those behind the scenes, according to host Ranada Shepard. In a recent and extensive interview with the Hollywood Reporterstated that he understood the backlash due to a number of factors.
“I've always had my roots [the fact that] I understand if this is jarring,” Shepard began. “Because what you needed was someone to say to everybody, 'I know you're used to the sweet sitcom, but this isn't just a rerun, it's in a different genre that requires it to be loud and offensive with hard jokes and inappropriate. ' Without that kind of framing, you can never blame the audience, and I never would.”
Shepard also said that a lack of the right attitude can also be a factor. “You haven't seen JB [Smoove] and Yvette [Nicole Brown] and Marseille [Martin] and Jay Pharoah and Slink Johnson on couches across America, which is what usually happens when you start a show,” he said. “There was no framing that the audience had, it was just, 'Watch it and make up your own mind.' And, they watched and formed an opinion.”
The trailer was released in March for the reboot of the series written by the late Norman Lear (Lear remains an executive producer), which premiered all 10 episodes on April 12. John Amos, who played patriarch James Evans, previously spoke about the reboot and the challenges it would present. As for BernNadette Stanis, who played Thelma Evans, she said the show differed from her expectations of what it would be.
“Look, there are some people it's not going to be for,” Shepard said the Hollywood Reporter. “But I ask these people, 'Do you watch adult cartoons?' Because I know a lot of people don't watch adult cartoons, so if that's not your genre, this genre is going to be difficult for you. stand on social commentary and each has a message? Absolutely.” He also urged people to give the show a chance. “Just leave it for a while and see the stories and you'll understand.”
