Heavy Song of the Week is a Heavy Consequence feature that breaks down the best metal and hard rock tracks you need to hear every Friday. This week, the honor goes to Polar's “We Won't Sleep.”
The often maligned genres of nu-metal and rap rock are long overdue for a reappraisal, and festivals like Sick New World have proven that there is still a market for this music, a nostalgia even for it.
Perhaps aware of these trends, British metalcore group Polar is betting on the nu-metal revival with their latest single “We Won't Sleep.” Frontman Adam Woodford literally spits his lines (you can hear the phlegm coming out) against grooved, churning riffs. He evokes a not-so-distant past when songs like this dominated the radio, and Polar's complete lack of irony is refreshing and necessary for the song to work. These guys are dead serious, even when they're walking the streets B-Boy style in the music video.
Honorable mentions:
Cold Cave – “Blueberries”
“Blueberries” begins with two loud industrial crashes that prompt the mind to remember Einstürzende Neubauten. A clever Cold Cave trick: surprise the listener to get their attention and then direct things elsewhere. The rest of the song is more in the group's typical industrial/darkwave wheelhouse, with lush synths and vintage drum machines creating ideal bed music for deep, mournful vocals, a la Depeche Mode and New Order.
Board – “Union”
Baltimore is an absolute hotbed of hardcore right now, and you can add Gasket to the list of badass bands in that scene. “Syndicate” is suitable for a crunchy mosh in an abandoned warehouse, exerting the raw aggression that has always been the motivation for playing hardcore and fast punk in general. There are no artistic pretensions here.
Highly Suspicious – “Summer Voodoo”
Highly Suspect threw their fans a curveball with the synth-pop of their two previous albums. There are still some electronic touches on their new single “Summertime Voodoo,” but the band adopts a more psychedelic/stoner sound here. The result is a long seven-minute workout that is appropriately complemented by blurry camera footage of a motorcycle in the desert in the music video.
