Blossoms have today announced details of their highly anticipated fifth studio album. gary, available September 20. The band have also revealed the album's title track, along with a new video, directed by the band's Ewan Ogden and Tom Ogden.
The video features cameos from Rick Astley and Sean Dyche, who reprises his role from the previous Blossoms video. What can I say after I apologize? which received widespread media attention upon its release in May.
Speaking about new song Gary and its accompanying video, Blossoms' Tom Ogden says:
'The video was directed by myself and my brother Ewan Ogden and picks up where our last video left off. The song is based on a true story I heard on the radio last year: Gary, the 8-foot fiberglass gorilla, was stolen from Reynard Garden in Carluke, Scotland. We've recreated the story on screen with Rick Astley playing Andrew Scott, the garden center owner, and the gang who rob Gary. This video was great fun to make and was shot again on 16mm film, on location around Stockport, the Peak District and Derbyshire.
The song itself is the centerpiece of the album and after playing around with different titles, we kept coming back to Gary. In the end, it could only have been 'Gary'.

The new Blossoms album is produced by the band's frequent collaborator, The Coral's James Skelly, along with Jungle's Josh-Lloyd Watson, who produced What can I say after I apologize? AND nightclub. CMAT has also co-written two songs on the album, I like your style and Why do I give you the worst of me?
Tom Ogden adds:
'The heart of this record is about the five of us recording live together in a room for the first time in years. We wanted to capture the energy of what it feels like when five friends decide to form a band and make music together.
We also collaborated more than ever on this record and, in addition to working with our long-time collaborator James Skelly, we brought in Josh and CMAT (Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson). We rented an AirBnB on Anglesey seafront and locked ourselves in for the writing session with Ciara and it was one of the most inspiring days we've had as a band. During the writing process, we listened to a lot of Bowie, Blondie and Hall & Oates.”
Other notable tracks on the album include Big star, I like your styleand mothers. Speaking about how these songs came together, Ogden explains:
'The tracks on the album itself are based on different stories, mostly from personal experiences. In 'Big Star', after seeing a well-known music journalist at the Chateau Marmont, I consider walking up and introducing myself, but then shyness takes over and I don't. 'I Like Your Look' is a nod to Blondie's 'Rapture' and a nod to Joan Baez's 'Time Rag', and lyrically explores a tongue-in-cheek approach to high fashion. 'Mothers' is an ode to Joe and I's friendship and references the fact that our mothers were friends in the '80s.
Blossoms will support Tom Grennan at Gunnersbury Park on August 10 and play festivals including Isle of Wight and TRSNMT, before the band's biggest headline gig to date at Wythenshawe Park, Manchester, on Sunday, August 25.
Since forming in 2013, Blossoms have enjoyed great success and acclaim.
