Veteran actor and Emmy Award winner by Andre Braugher The cause of death was revealed to be lung cancer.
The entertainment People are sending their tributes to the late actor Andre Braugher, who died Monday at his home in New Jersey. At the time, the veteran performer's cause of death was not released, with reps saying only that he had been dealing with “a brief illness.” On Thursday (December 14), his publicist Jennifer Allen informed the media that Braugher's death was due to lung cancer.
Braugher was known for keeping his private life staunchly private, only opening up in an in-depth interview for New York Times Magazine in 2014. Discussing his life away from the camera (Braugher leaves behind his wife, actress Ami Brabson, and three sons along with his brother Charles Jennings and mother Sally Braugher), he said he had “obstacles” and that he had given up smoking and alcohol years ago. “I won't go into details, but I haven't always been at the top of my game, and that comes at a cost,” he said before remarking, “There won't be a memoir.”
Braugher, 61, was best known for his intense and stoic roles, scoring a breakthrough in the 1989 drama. Glory alongside Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. From there, he played detective Frank Pembleton Homicide: Life on the Street, Barry Levinson's hit NBC police procedural that ran for seven seasons, earning Braugher his first of two Emmy Awards. He would be nominated 11 times in total, with four of those for his role as Captain Raymond Holt on the Fox and NBC sitcoms Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The Chicago native was also an acclaimed stage actor who loved Shakespearean roles.
His most recent role was as New York Times editor-in-chief Dean Baquet in He said, the 2022 film focusing on journalists who broke the story of Harvey Weinstein sexually abusing women for years. The family of Andre Braugher has requested that donations be made in lieu of flowers Classic Theater of Harlemwhere he served as vice president of the Board of Directors. The theater's Associate Artistic Director, Carl Cofield, shared a photo of himself with Braugher on Instagram, writing: “Andrè you were the light for so many of us.”
