Welcome to Consequence Chat, a feature where Consequence staff members discuss the biggest stories in pop culture. Today, we take a look at the legacy of Lostas the groundbreaking series returns to Netflix today. The transcript below has been edited for clarity and brevity.
Mary Siroky (Associate Editor): Well, friends, as three well-known fans of LostWe couldn't be more excited for the show to move to Netflix, which will hopefully open up a whole new audience to the magic of the island, years of great acting, and some pretty incredible writing. Lost It changed the game in so many ways, and I'm just as excited to see it again as I am to see some reactions for the first time in the timeline. How do you think the value of seeing it again is maintained? Have any of you rewatched it in its entirety?
Paolo Ragusa (associate editor): Having been between the ages of 9 and 15 during the show’s original run, I rewatched it twice: once in 2017 and again during the pandemic. I thought the show was interesting as a kid when my parents watched it, but of course, a lot of the heavier themes went over my head.
Watching it again for the first time completely changed my relationship with the show and why it was important. I think being able to watch it all in succession, without having to wait for a new episode every week, was actually a useful way to understand the overall scope of the story. I know this isn't how the show was intended to be seen, but it's a quicker way to delve into what the showrunners were going for.
Maria: I can understand it: my sister and I started watching it when Hulu first appeared on the scene. (There weren't even commercials yet!) It allowed us to catch up on the early seasons, which we were also too young to watch when it first aired. But we caught up when season 5 aired and watched the final season in real time. Admittedly, I've lost count of how many times I've rewatched the entire show, but it's been a few years. What about you, Liz?
Liz Shannon Miller (senior entertainment editor): You know, it's funny: I've definitely rewatched large chunks of the show (I can't tell you how many times I've watched “The Constant,” for obvious reasons) but I honestly don't think I've ever done a new binge from start to finish.
