The Smashing Pumpkins' Aghori Mhori Mei topped this week's new music poll featuring artists across a variety of genres.
Music fans voted in a poll published on Friday (August 2). Advertising signpicking the Billy Corgan-led rock band's 13th studio album as their favorite new music release of the past week.
Aghori Mhori Mei garnered 70% of the vote in the poll, securing a notable lead over new releases from Charli xcx featuring Billie Eilish (“Guess”), Kacey Musgraves (Deeper into the well), Justin Quiles (Permanent), Jack White (without a name), and others.
The 10 track of the Pumpkins Aghori Mhori Mei is the sequel to last year's rock opera in three acts, ATUM. The new set was recorded amid the veteran Chicago act's busy touring schedule over the past few years.
“In writing this new album I was intrigued by the well-worn maxim, 'you can't go home again,'” guitarist/singer Corgan said in a statement. “Personally I found it true to form, but I thought about it, what if we tried it anyway? Not so much to look back with sentimentality but rather as a means to move forward. to see if in the balance of success and failure, our ways of making music circa 1990-1996 would still inspire something revelatory.”
Corgan called the two-plus hour, 33-song ATUM a follow-up to Smashing Pumpkins' classic 1995 double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and 2000s Machina/The Machines of God.
The mid-July announcement of Aghori Mhori arrived as the Pumpkins wrapped up a string of fall tours in South and Latin America, marking the group's first venture south in nearly a decade. Additionally, the trio – Corgan, James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlain – are currently on the road opening for Green Day on their Saviors tour, along with headlining across the US through September. The Latin American tour kicks off on November 1st in Brasilia, Brazil.
Following Smashing Pumpkins in this week's poll is a remix of Charli xcx's “Guess” featuring Billie Eilish. The piece garnered 10% of the votes.
