Google unveils the new Pixel 9 smartphone series and new Wearables

Google held its Made By Google event on Tuesday, August 13, and unveiled the Pixel 9 smartphone lineup and some new accessories.

Samsung recently released its new foldable smartphones and accessories, so it's time for Google to do the same, unveiling its revamped Pixel smartphone lineup that now has four phones for customers to choose from.

Let's break down everything Google announced.

The Pixel 9 series is growing by one

Google's Pixel 9 lineup is here, featuring the 6.3-inch Pixel 9, a 6.8-inch Pixel 9 Pro XL, and a new smaller Pixel 9 Pro option at 6.3 inches.

The new phones feature a redesigned oval-shaped camera shell, an updated version of Google's G4 Tensor chip, improved battery life, and a new satellite SOS feature.

The pricing of the devices has also been revealed, with the Pixel 9 getting a $100 price increase over the previous model starting at $799, the Pixel 9 Pro starting at $999 and the Pro XL costing $1,099 and up.

The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL will launch on August 22, and the Pixel 9 Pro will launch in early September.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold slims down and gets a bigger screen

Like Samsung, Google is very much into the foldable phone market and was very excited to introduce its new offering Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

This year's foldable flagship is taller and slimmer. It also has larger screens for users to admire while gaming, scrolling through their favorite social media platforms or watching movies.

The external screen measures 6.3 inches, while the internal screen is eight inches. The G4 Tensor chip powers the phone, and the maximum brightness of the internal display is 2,700 nits, easily eclipsing the 1,450 nits of the previous Pixel Fold model.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold costs $1,799 and will be released on September 4.

Some bold new AI capabilities are coming from Google

The tech giant is putting its Gemini AI assistant to work on its new smartphone, allowing users to ask for information while using apps or ask it about photos they've taken.

There will also be two new AI apps for you: Pixel Screenshots, which will let users find information in saved screenshots using the phone's built-in AI, and a new text-to-image generator called Pixel Studio.

Another cool and interesting AI feature announced is “Add Me,” which lets you add yourself to an image using AI to stitch two scenes together.

The Pixel Watch 3 and Google Buds Pro 2 were also announced

The Pixel Watch 3 will now be available in a larger 45mm option alongside the 41mm model. The new smartwatch will feature thinner bezels, giving users more screen to see and a new ultra-wideband chip.

The display is now brighter, with a maximum speed of 2,000 nits, and will have several new fitness features.

A new feature available to European customers is the Pixel Watch 3's ability to detect if the user's pulse stops and no movement is sensed.

The 41mm Pixel Watch 3 costs $349.99 with Bluetooth, and the 45mm watch starts at $399.99. Both models ship on September 10th.

Google's Pixel Buds Pro 2 are now smaller and lighter and feature a new Tensor A1 chip that the company says will improve the Buds Pro 2's active noise cancellation.

The new fin design ensures that the Pixel Buds Pro 2 stay in your ears during intense workouts, with users getting eight hours of audio playback with ANC enabled. You can get up to 30 hours of use with a fully charged case.

This year's model costs $229, a slight increase from the previous model's $200 starting price, and will ship on September 26.
