Over 20 years after Radiohead's studio sessions were fruitful enough to produce a pair of now-classic albums, Child A and Amnesiacside project with Smile accomplished a similar feat Cutoutsthe band's second LP for 2024.
It arrived on October 4, just eight months after the release of the second album Eye wallthe trio of Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and drummer Tom Skinner have a 10-track LP ready, consisting of tracks from the band's previous concerts (“Eyes and Mouth”, “Colors Fly”, “Bodies Laughing”), songs that debuted on their since-cancelled tour in support Eye wall (“Instant Psalm”, “Zero Sum”, “Tiptoe”), recent single “Don't Get Me Started” and “The Slip”, as well as new tracks such as album opener “Foreign Spies”, which revealed the Smile Wednesday via a Weirdcore directed video:
Smile spent the past week teasing the LP with a series of social media posts that, when decoded, hinted at the CutoutsTracklist. A remnant of that scavenger hunt remained with Wednesday's tracklist reveal, as the ninth song, “UGcgWGFkcWE=”, was already decoded by intrepid Redditors as another unheard track, “No Words”.
In addition, Smile shared the visual for their studio cover of “Zero Sum,” which they premiered live in March 2024. The song also lends the lyric “A cutout try to fill the void” to the album's title:
The songs up Cutouts were recorded during the same Oxford and Abbey Road Studios sessions as Eye wallone of Rolling StoneThe best albums of 2024 so far. Both albums were produced by Sam Petts-Davies, feature string arrangements by the London Contemporary Orchestra and feature artwork by Yorke and long-time artistic collaborator Stanley Donwood.
Cutouts is available in pre-order now in a variety of formats including limited edition white vinyl and purple cassette. However, after its release, Smile will not immediately hit the road in support of the album. Instead, Yorke has planned a rare solo Pacific Rim trek for the fall.
