Jane's Addiction's concert in Boston came to an abrupt end on Friday (September 13) when frontman Perry Farrell attacked guitarist Dave Navarro on stage.
THE fight recorded by fans at Boston's Leader Bank Pavilion erupted midway through the reunited band's performance of “Ocean Size,” when Farrell became angry for unknown reasons and lunged at Navarro's shoulder. Pharrell, 65, then continued to yell at the guitarist, 57, who appeared confused, and the singer eventually threw a punch at Navarro.
“What the f…?” Navarro was seen shouting as crew members restrained Farrell and dragged him backstage. The guitarist then took out his guitar and walked off the stage, ending the concert after 11 songs. Jane's Addiction reunion shows usually have three or four additional acts.
Jane's Addiction had not publicly commented on the situation at press time. Bulletin board has contacted the band's representatives.
Farrell's wife, Etty Lau Farrell, took to social media shortly after Friday's concert to share her side of the story in a lengthy message. “There was clearly a lot of tension and animosity between the members.. the magic that made the band so dynamic. Well, the dynamite ignited,” wrote Ettie Lau Instagram along with a video of the match on stage.
“Perry's frustration had grown, night after night, he felt the stage volume was too loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band. Perry suffered from tinnitus and a sore throat every night. But when the audience in the front row started complaining to Perry that they were cursing him, that the band was playing too loud and they couldn't hear him, Perry lost it.”
She added that there had been an altercation backstage between her husband and Jane's Addiction bassist Eric Avery, who “put Perry in a headlock and punched him three times in the stomach.”
“Perry was a mad beast for the next half hour – finally he didn't calm down, but burst out and cried and cried,” wrote Ettie Lau. “Eric, well he either didn't understand what de-escalation meant or he took advantage of the situation and got some cheap shots at Perry.
Jane's Addiction's Live Nation reunion tour — which finds the four original members hitting the road for the first time in 14 years — kicked off in early August. At press time, the band's next show was scheduled for Sunday (September 15) in Bridgeport, Conn.
