Madlibthe longtime producer who made his name early as a member of Stones Throw Records has filed a lawsuit against his former manager, Eothen “Egon” Alapatt. According to the complaint, Madlib alleges that Egon engages in business practices that harm their partnership.
In a tease we got earlier this week, Madlib, real name Otis Jackson Jr., filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Thursday (October 31), which also happened to be the anniversary of his collaborator's death Madlib on Madvillainy, Daniel “MF DOOM” Dumile.
In reviewing our complaint, the producer claims that Alapatt was involved in shady dealings that led to the pair's departure from Stones Throw Records in 2010. Madlib took Egon on board at this point, which led to the creation of two affiliated companies, the Madcine Show and Rappcats. Alapatt was to run the business along with co-founder and recording engineer Jeffrey “Jeff Jank” Carlson, who was also named in the lawsuit.
Alapatt also runs Now-Again Records, which Jackson's complaint alleges was put in place as a go-between for business deals that existed for Jackson. However, Jackson says Alapatt only tried to benefit himself and his unique business.
“EGON not only failed to perform these duties, but also engaged in degrees of self-serving, withholding information from and repeatedly violating his duties to Madlib, and otherwise engaged in persistent and pervasive mismanagement,” the complaint reads in part.
The lawsuit further adds that Alapatt forced Jackson “from several key music business platforms that he should have access to, including but not limited to Ingrooves, Apple Music, Bandcamp and YouTube, as well as MADLIB's own Facebook account and the Instagram account for his character QUASIMOTO.”
Alapatt has yet to publicly respond to the complaint.
This comes after MF DOOM's widow, Jasmine Dumile Thompson, claimed that Alapatt took over two dozen rhyming notebooks belonging to the beloved lyricist that contained songs that were never released. Alapatt reportedly hopes to donate the notebooks to an archive, against the wishes of DOOM's widow.
