THE BRIDGE CITY SINNERS – A GOOD CONVERSATION WITH LIBBY LUX
By Ralph Beauchamp
I'm a big fan of Amigo The Devil and that's why, somewhere along the line, they introduced me The Bridge City Sinners. THE sinners began as a group of travelers in the Pacific Northwest. They graduated to a full ensemble with four albums under their belt. The last one is In the Age of Doubt released this year. THE Bridge City SinnerThe sound of s is completely unique and unique. Everything about them is special. Built around a foundation of bluegrass, folk, punk and jazz, they have created a dark hybrid that is beautifully macabre and melodically sublime.
Led by the bold Libby Lux (Lead/Ukulele), The Bridge City Sinners they deliver voracious textures that captivate their listeners to their core. Every song is an adventure and Lux's voice is both spicy and full of majestic tones. The rest of the band consists of King Strang (Guitar), Scott Michaud (Upright Bass), Clyde McGee (Banjo) and Lightnin' Luke (Fiddle). Each member is a ruthless musician who brings everything they have sinners. Additionally, the band has an inspired DIY approach to their music. They have started their own record label (Flail Records) and handle all their business affairs themselves, which is quite impressive.
Libby Lux was kind enough to sit down with us for this cool chat after their show at Webster Underground. Their show review will be posted sometime in the near future.
AMP: How did this unique musical journey begin?
LIBBY: CRAIGSLIST!! I found myself in a place of deep dark depression and asked the question “what makes me happy?” And the answer was, and always has been, music. So I went to the Craigslist musicians section and started browsing! The rest is history!!
AMPERAGE: Your music spans many genres, including bluegrass, jazz, country and punk. How would you describe your music?
LIBBY: Wow man, it's hard!! I have heard so many things said. yeehaw goth, black grass, folk metal, alternative rock. I think it really depends on the song you're listening to. Our personal musical interests are all over the place and we draw inspiration from every avenue. So tell us whatcha like, just don't call us late for dinner!!
AMP: You pair well with artists like Amigo the Devil and Gallows Bound. Is there a macabre bluegrass scene brewing?
LIBBY: Oh, it was a brewin!! There is a playlist called “murder folk” and it has a good list of a handful of other bands in the scene!
AMP: What are some of the themes you incorporate into your music?
LIBBY: Whatever comes to mind, we're a playful bunch. We have songs about giant rats and trolls, as well as more serious topics like loss and addiction.
AMP: You've done everything in your music career with a DIY approach. What are some of the pros and cons?
LIBBY: Plus: it's a point of pride that we've been able to have our say on every piece of the puzzle. Minus: it's very hard work!!
AMP: Dynamics can make or break a band. What's the dynamic like in the BCS?
LIBBY: I'm happy to report that after 7 full years of being friends/playing music together, we're still going strong! King Strang fills the roll of annoying kid brother that you really love to hate lol. Clyde is thoughtful, attentive and always willing to help. Scott works hard and cares about the people around him even harder. Lucas is like the moody teenager who keeps to himself but is still happy to join the family's fun night. Then there's me…I'm loyal and loving with a sharp edge, I'd put my life on the line for those I love, my 'family' and we sure are just that.
AMP: What excites the band in today's world?
LIBBY: A good truck stop.
AMP: Any last words for your fans?
LIBBY: Collywobbles.
