Cher is out there hitting all the usual spots to promote her highly anticipated autobiography, Cher, The Memoir: Part One. And a recurring theme in her conversations is how apologetic Cher is, including talking candidly about how difficult it was to review her 78 years on Earth, most of which have been spent in public.
And, Cher being Cher, sometimes that honesty can veer into not-safe-for-morning TV talk. That's exactly what happened The Today Show on Tuesday morning (November 19), when the singing legend sat down to talk about the memoir with co-star Hoda Kotb and dropped an uncensored F-bomb while telling a hilarious story about some solid relationships and career advice he got from late comedy icon Lucille Ball.
To be fair, Cher did warn Kotb that she was about to sprinkle some delicious language into the breakfast mix when the host asked what Ball's advice had been when Cher split from her husband/singer Sonny Bono in 1975. “I can't tell it TV,” Cher said before making sure producers would “mark it up.” When Kotb promised it would be censored, Cher stepped forward and told the story, as it is.
She then described reaching out to Ball — who went through a similar public split with her husband and I love Lucy Her co-star Desi Arnaz 15 years earlier – who offered some sage and salty advice after Cher discovered that, as she told Kotb, Bono had taken “all her money” before they split. “I said, 'Lucy, I'm calling you because as far as I know, there's never been a situation other than yours,'” Cher told Ball about a female entertainer who publicly left her husband on and off screen. “And she said, 'I got him. You're the one with the talent!'”
Although the f-word is now recorded in the online video of the moment at Today feed, after it happened, a clearly shocked Kotb said, “Oh!… we didn't have the seven seconds [delay]. But we'll get it for the next feed!”
After realizing the f-bomb hadn't gone off the air, Cher turned to Kotb and pointed the finger, saying, “Well you said I could!”
Kotb laughed saying, “I should have bleeped it myself! Invoice!”
This moment followed Cher's visit on Monday night (November 18) to Tonight showwhere he did another funny segment with host Jimmy Fallon and talked about how difficult it was to lay it all out in the book — which is the first half of a two-part project to follow Part Two next year.
“It was ab–ch,” she told Fallon of the first half of the book, which follows Cherilyn Sarkisian's rise to global fame as one half of the duo Sonny & Cher. “It's not that hard to go through life. But I did it a few times because it didn't work out the first time. The second time I didn't want to say anything. And then I thought, “You know what? Give back the money.' It's difficult because when you tell your life there are pieces that you would like to keep.”
More importantly for her fans, the new Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has also occasionally mentioned that she is working on her twenty-eighth studio album and the follow-up to her 2018 ABBA cover album Dancing Queen; set it free Christmas holiday album in 2023. When Fallon asked if a new LP was on the horizon, Cher said she would “almost” start working on one, and the audience applauded.
