As the record-breaking Sphere continues to redefine entertainment in Las Vegas, a double is set to do the same in Abu Dhabi.
The UAE capital will become the second location to build a Sphere venue after the structure's owners, Sphere Entertainment, reached an agreement with Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism.
“Esfera's vision has always included a global network of locations, and today's announcement is an important milestone toward that goal,” said James L. Dolan, the company's executive chairman and chief executive officer, in a Press release. “Sphere is redefining live entertainment and expanding the reach of its transformative impact. We are proud to collaborate with DCT Abu Dhabi to develop Sphere in their city.”
At 366 feet high and 516 feet wide, the $2.3 billion Las Vegas orb is the largest spherical structure in the world. Inside, a state-of-the-art concert hall projects mind-blowing graphics on the world's largest, highest-resolution immersive LED screen, stretching above and behind the crowd.
The news comes after plans to open a second Sphere location in London were scuttled by the city's mayor, Sadiq Khan, who reportedly rejected Dolan's proposal on the grounds that it would have caused “unacceptable harm to hundreds of residents.” “.
Located in a “prime location” in the Abu Dhabi metropolis, the new venue is said to emulate the size and scale of its counterpart in Sin City, which has a capacity of 20,000 people. Vegas Sphere generated more than $1 billion in revenue in the fiscal year since its grand opening.
In other Vegas Sphere news, Anyma was recently confirmed as the pioneering venue's first electronic music headliner. Billed collectively as “The End of Genesys,” a reference to the superstar DJ's impressive audio-visual brand and albums of the same name, the landmark residency spans eight shows: December 27-January 1 and January 10-11.
