K-pop girl group aespa have launched into space with a new Grimes-assisted remix of their hit single “Supernova.” The song from the four-woman band's debut studio album, Armageddon – The 1st albumgets an intergalactic brush-up as part of a six-track remix EP out Friday (September 20); iScreaM Vol. 33 ” Supernova / Remixes Armageddon.
In an X post, Grimes explained why she stepped out of her typical lane for the project. “I don't usually do remixes, but I couldn't resist messing with this accapella, even if the original production of this song is unbeatable,” Grimes wrote. “I went cyber twee on this and even had @angelfir_e sit behind me and stop me every time I tried to overthink the production so… it's pretty dirty.”
He's not kidding. While the original track by KARINA, GISELLE, WINTER AND NINGNING was a lively, hyper-danceable pop bangerin Grimes' hands it gets a firmware update with chilly metal beats, sped-up vocals from Grimes' alien sounds, heavenly harmonies and new wave keys.
In addition, on Instagram Grimes said sorry/not sorry to change the song's catchy chorus and drop a verse that struck a chord with her. “I know I changed the hook, but I was so moved by the lyric 'bring no light of a dying star' that was casually in there. I felt it needed a moment,” she wrote. Grimes also published a series of photos with the team in which he rocks a futuristic jumpsuit and bright red glasses. “Tear up the old dirts he loved,” she wrote alongside the snaps.
In addition to Grimes' “Supernova” remix, the EP features three new remixes of the album's title track — by Flava D, 2Spade and Mount XLR — as well as the original versions of the title track and “Supernova.” In XGrimes revealed that she also did her own remix of “Armageddon,” noting, “They don't want to, but I could ask. I also have a second supernova remix which is kind of good but my baby broke the computer it was on so it can't be mixed.'
iScreaM Vol. 33 is part of a four-year streak from SM's EDM label ScreaM Records featuring remixes of songs by SM artists that has previously featured remixes of tracks from NCT 127, SHINee, Red Velvet, Taeyeon, Girls' Generation and more.
