killer moonThe self-titled debut album from Texas-based group MoonKill, it is a 10-track collection of Texas punk, a sound vaguely reminiscent of Deep Purple, Talking Heads and Judas Priest reincarnated as a garage punk band.
In May 2022, the future members of MoonKill gathered at a T-shirt factory in Austin, Texas, for a jam session. The drummer, Fred, was the common denominator of the group, which included a guitarist who lived in a trailer in his driveway. The jam session resulted in their first song, “Long Line to Hell.”
MoonKill performed their first live concert to a full house in 2023, followed by live performances almost continuously. The band self-produced a 3-song EP, The Kong sessions, which they gave to Roky Moon, who after listening to it offered to produce their debut album. They finished the album in February 2024.
Entry points include opener “Dead Holiday,” a mix of heavy rock and snarling punk flavors with a fiercely muscular beat. The vocals, provided by Dan, feature deep tenor tones, almost a baritone, that infuse the lyrics with urgent, indignant timbres.
“Chainsaw Bathroom Sex,” a spectacular title for a song, unfolds with circular guitars, a pulsating bassline, and pounding drums. Hoarse, grimacing vocals imbue the lyrics with perverse and unpleasant textures. “It's a long way to the ground / This is a certified vision, I've come to bind you / Take me somewhere, somewhere dark and dirty / Close the door and open it for me.”
An incredible guitar intro sets “Murderhouse” on a thrilling, thrilling ride, traveling over a frenetic melody drenched in jagged surfaces and rounded, roaring vocals that convey a sense of imminence. “Full Stop” begins with pop-punk style guitars over a staccato beat. The guitars change to bold platinum colors, giving the melody a gruesome bellicosity.
“Long Line to Hell,” a hard-hitting tune, evokes sensations of Black Sabbath fused with a satanic punk band unleashing their screeching sound in the lobby of hell. Dynamic percussion highlighted by crushing cymbal accents injects the beat with a high-octane cadence.
“Friend or Foe” closes the album in punk style: droning and droning guitars and Dan's cavernous vocals, along with a raw, incandescent guitar solo that fries the atmosphere. With killer moonThis Texas band offers something cruelly superior.
