Stay Inside, the post-hardcore/indie/emo group, present their second album, transported awaya compelling follow-up to their EP, My faultreleased in January 2024, setting the stage for a more immersive sonic journey.
Having made a shocking debut with Visit In 2020, a masterful blend of atmospheric undertones and emo overtones exploring eschatological themes, Stay Inside found resonance with audiences during the pandemic-induced lockdown. Now with transported awaythe band ushers in a different musical landscape, drawing inspiration from the celebratory vibes of bands like Cymbals Eat Guitars, Dogleg, Clipse and The Microphones.
The thematic core of the album is Steeplechase Park, located in Coney Island. The historic backdrop of the park, devastated by fire in 1907, rebuilt and finally closed in 1964, becomes a metaphorical landscape to cherish moments with loved ones. Stay Inside encapsulates this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of gratitude and valuing positive influences in life.
Spanning nine tracks, transported away showcases standout moments, such as the opening track, “Bon Zs,” where robust guitars weave through a nuanced groove, complemented by metallic trumpets against edgy harmonics. “A Backyard” stands out for its bright, jangly guitars, exuding joyful energy and an invigorating rhythm that propels the song forward.
The intensity increases with “An Invitation”, where the drone of the guitars evolves into astonishing riffs, accompanied by a vocal delivery that expresses deep anguish. The track culminates with a smooth, unresolved outro, adding depth to the emotional journey. “My Fault” delights with soft, shimmering guitars, a mellifluous trumpet, and a jaunty bassline, creating a melody that captivates with its infectious movement.
Closing the album is “Steeplechase”, a composition that combines alternative elements with jazz-inspired nuances. The interplay between brass and angular percussion creates a unique duality that leaves a lasting impression.
While transported away shines in individual moments, there is a lingering sense of incompleteness, as if some diversity is missing, which makes the album veer towards a more homogeneous sound. Despite this, Stay Inside's sophomore effort retains its charm and offers a good listening experience that may leave some yearning for more variety and exploration.
