Andrew Bird and frequent collaborator Madison Cunningham have announced a new album: Cunningham Bird finds the musicians fully covering Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks' 1973 album, Buckingham Knicks. See Bird and Cunningham's new editions of “Crying at night“and”Crystal” below.
Cunningham Bird Releases October 18th. Mike Viola produced the album and also contributed Wurlitzer, bass and drums. Griffin Goldsmith also played drums and percussion on the new album.
“It's hard to listen to Buckingham Nicks' 1973 debut album without trying to imagine it as a prequel to the Fleetwood Mac legend,” Andrew Bird said in a statement. “It's hard to listen to this period of the album as it's out of print and not available on any streaming service. However, it's this youthful ambition and overindulgence that makes it exciting. The best reason to cover for anyone is that little part of you that thinks you can do it better. This album is the epitome of exaggeration and confidence, and it only made sense to embody that spirit ourselves. The confidence, that is, to rock an iconic, albeit underrated piece of jewelry. Madison is the most talented musician I have ever met. He has a restless ear, always looking for a new sound or harmonic twist. Her voice is lithe, agile and moving at any volume. I just had to find the right project to go deep and this is it.”
Madison Cunningham added: “Ever since I met and played with Andrew, I wanted to join forces with him regardless of our own projects. He is one of my favorite artists alive and one of the deepest musical collaborators I've been lucky enough to have. This buried record by Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham found us in a place where we were trying to figure out what we could do together. We're not familiar with it, but excited by its lack on streaming platforms, we decided to bring it front-to-back, our own way. It didn't surprise me how it ended up being one of the most creatively satisfying record-making experiences I've had, but the unexpected upside was how relevant some of those lyrics would be to my life at the time I was doing it. It became a lifeline for me and I hope we have done it justice.”
Andrew Bird and Madison Cunningham have collaborated on a handful of projects, including Bird's albums My Best Work and Internal problemsas well as his own Hark! ER. Cunningham released her latest studio album, Revealingin September 2022, and earned her a Grammy Award for Best Folk album.
