In our recurring Track by Track series, artists guide readers through each song on their new release. Today, up-and-coming indie pop and alternative hip-hop Audrey Nuna discusses her new album, DITCH.
Audrey Nuna's style is very similar to the art on her new album. DITCH: in your face, wild, strange and almost impossible to pin down. The artist's sophomore effort, a double LP filled with the crazy alternative hip-hop/indie pop you'll hear this year, proves that she is truly an unparalleled creative force.
Nuna already sounded free of gender boundaries on her debut, a liquid breakfast, as well as a handful of loose non-album tracks (including the irresistible “IdgaF,” which made it to our list of the best songs of 2023), but with DITCHThe promising young man breaks down barriers we didn't even know existed. Whether rapping, singing, or letting the spectacular production speak for itself, Nuna revels in the kind of controlled chaos that comes from a restless mind bursting with ideas.
While the project seems nothing if not creative, Nuna takes listeners through what she calls a “tapestry of growing pains” emotionally, from boastful hits to lovestruck bops to fleeting moments of dreaded introspection. Take the electro-fuckery single “Suckin Up,” which veers between harsh and sugar-sweet, “Locket,” which features some of Nuna’s strongest, most assertive hooks yet, or her single Small desktop concert.
“I always imagine this song as a car racing recklessly down a highway,” he says. Consequence from the song “1-Way.” “Separating from someone you love and adore will always have elements of confusion; I find this idea fascinating that there's really only one way (if any) to know, which is to go ahead and do it. And if you made a mistake, many times it's a one-way street and there's no going back to the way things used to be. It is a great shock, both sonorous and emotional.”
Yeah DITCH is the result of growing pains, there may be something to it. Hear the Wildness of Audrey Nuna's New Album DITCH below, followed by his track-by-track breakdown of the record.
