The singer-songwriter needed stitches after being hit in the face with a mobile phone during a performance in New York last year.
There are some concerts disclaimers about flashing lights or fireworks that may startle audience members; But Bebe Rexha's shows, in particular, come with a different caveat. During a recent performance in Green Bay, the singer-songwriter reminded the crowd of the consequences of having objects thrown at her after several audience members were turned away for it.
“If you want to punch me in the face, I made them blame the other guy,” Rexa said on stage. “I would love to be richer.” Last year, he needed stitches after being hit in the face with a cellphone during a performance in New York. Attendee Nicholas Malvagna admitted to throwing the phone at Rexha, explaining that he was “trying to see if I could hit her with the phone at the end of the show because it would be funny.”
The incident was one entry in a long list of strange incidents at live events over the past two years, which included a fan throwing a bag of ashes on stage at a Pink concert and Harry Styles throwing Skittles in the eye during since his broadcasts. Despite the social debate surrounding proper concert etiquette evolving in light of these cases, which seem to have exploded following the return of live music post-pandemic, audiences don't seem to have learned their lesson.
But these attacks and attempts to land a viral moment come at a cost. Malvagna was charged with two counts of third-degree assault, one count of second-degree harassment, one count of second-degree aggravated harassment and one count of attempted third-degree assault. Earlier this year, he accepted an offer to have his charge dismissed if he completes 40 days of community service and does not violate a protection order for six months.
