True to form, Ben Böhmer's new single is a masterclass in translating the messiness of life into evocative dance music.
The German electronic music virtuoso delves into the murky depths of self-sabotage on “Best Life,” the lead single from his upcoming album. Bloomwhich he revealed today.
Featuring singer-songwriter duo JONAH, the song shines with indie sensibility and bittersweet nostalgia, artfully capturing the disorienting paradox of looking back while being propelled forward. Their lyrics reflect on mistakes made and relationships frayed, reflecting our own fractured minds as we experience the pain of lost connection.
JONAH's plea, “Look at me and say it's alright,” weighs over Böhmer's intoxicating production, a desperate cry for absolution that questions whether or not love can weather self-inflicted storms. Meanwhile, bleary-eyed memories of an ancient llama “dancing in the headlights” plunge us deeper into the depths of melancholy.
“'Best Life' was born from an unexpected moment,” says Böhmer EDM.com. “It wasn't part of the plan, but the song emerged from a vulnerability shared with my collaborator [Angelo of JONAH]. The opening lyrical snippet, 'Best Life, I just fucked up everything', struck a chord, and the song became a way to explore the emotional rollercoaster of trying, failing and trying again, and sometimes losing people. important along the way. These experiences leave an indelible mark on us, shaping who we are. I wanted to capture that raw honesty and vulnerability. “We all face challenges and setbacks, but it's crucial to accept those imperfections, learn from them, and keep moving forward.”
It is scheduled for release on September 27 through Ninja Tune. Bloom is Böhmer's third studio album and first since 2021. Breathe again. The project will also include “One Last Call”, a brilliant collaboration with Berlin singer-songwriter Felix Raphael.
BloomBöhmer tells us, it's “the most vibrant and diverse album” he's ever written.
“During its creation I felt a sense of freedom that allowed me to explore many new directions,” Böhmer explained. “The album was crafted in two main environments: in nature and at home. After extensive touring, I found balance and solace in nature, which became a major source of inspiration. I often found myself retreating to natural environments, where I wrote large parts of the album. I also set up a home studio, where I bought an upright piano and dedicated myself to writing traditional songs.
“Working directly from the comfort of my home in a cozy environment, and from composing on a piano to performing with singers, naturally led me to incorporate many organic sounds and classic song structures,” he continued. “Two of the songs, 'Evermore' and 'Rain,' were even re-recorded with a 40-string orchestra. [the FAMES Orchestra]. It seemed natural to choose a title that reflected this influence. Bloom “It represents the diversity, colors and balance that nature brought to my life.”
