Better Lovers, the supergroup formed by former members of The Dillinger Escape Plan and Every Time I Die, have announced their first full-length album, Highly irresponsiblewhich is due out October 25 via SharpTone Records. They also released the lead single and video “A White Horse Covered in Blood.”
The song starts off strong, with Greg Puciato’s energetic vocals and a barrage of guitar riffs that strike a midpoint between thrash metal and hardcore. The second half of the song features a big break after a lengthy and very effective musical break, one that’s long enough for Puciato to smash a microphone stand against a wall in slow motion in the accompanying music video.
“Playing and listening to our own music makes us want to run through walls,” guitarist Jordan Buckley said of the Eric Richter-produced video. “So we made a video where, while playing and listening to our own music, we run through walls. This is not rocket surgery!”
For a band that was only introduced 16 months ago, Better Lovers already have two major tours, an EP and the No. 1 song (“30 Under 13”) on Heavy Consequence’s list of the best metal and hard rock songs of 2023. Now, they’re adding a full-length album in late October.
In addition to Puciato (ex-Dillinger Escape Plan) and Buckley (Every Time I Die), the supergroup is rounded out by guitarist Will Putney (Fit for an Autopsy), bassist Steve Micciche (Every Time I Die) and drummer Clayton Holyoak (Every Time I Die, ex-Norma Jean). Putney also handled production and engineering duties on the new album.
“Writing and recording our first album was a little more surgical than the EP, but it had a similar lack of restraint,” Buckley said. “I feel more pressure giving a date for this press release than I did all winter in Will’s studio. I got to wake up every day and watch the masters hone their craft. I was a student. It was a playground. It was all fun. We read each other’s minds. We even created our own language at times.
She continued: “I didn’t know if I was watching my closest friends write music or if I was watching how music used us to exist. The voice in my head was warning me how much I loved it. Highly irresponsible Gone was the thought of getting back on that bull. It had been replaced by big ideas, inside jokes, and a renewed love for helping write songs that don't sound like anything else. Humans and animals are hardwired to do wild things for what they love. Highly irresponsible And we love what we've created. We know you'll love it too.”
Better Lovers will perform at the Louder Than Life and Aftershock festivals this fall, as well as their own holiday festival in Buffalo, New York, in December.
