Big Daddy Kane has seen his fair share of rap battles in his time, so of course he had some thoughts on the main event happening right now between rap heavyweights Kendrick Lamar and Drake. The rap legend sat down together The Art of Dialogue podcast and was asked about the beef when he revealed that the conversation had turned him off
“I was trying to keep up with the Kendrick and Drake thing, but I kind of lost interest,” he shared. “It just wasn't exciting to me – not because of the two, but because of the fan base. The fan base just got there, I'm good.”
“It's not a competition about who spits the best bars,” he clarified. “It's a matter of fact-checking to see if that person was telling the truth. It's like, if the line is dope and it's directed at you, it's dope. It is so simple. … Why do we try to critique and decipher what was said? It's just a rhyme. Enjoy the music for what it is. It's a battle, they go against each other.”
Kane added: “In my days of fighting people, I've said things about people that aren't true, but it was funny. You laughed and enjoyed it. If that's how the younger generation sees fighting, then that's their thing. I hope they enjoy it. It just wasn't for me, man. Like I said, it's not about Kendrick or Drake. it's the fan base, the listeners and their comments and opinions. They make it enjoyable for me.”
He admitted that he liked Kendrick's effort a little more, but also said that Drake was finally “saying some s–t” before controllers turned him off. “Everyone wants to check the facts and [say], “Someone wrote this for him” and this, that and… you know what? You can have it, I'm fine. I'm gonna go back and listen to Kool Moe Dee and Busy Bee, you can have that s–t.”
When asked who he's a bigger fan of between Kendrick and Drake, the man they call King Asiatic Nobody's Equal actually said he's more of a J. Cole fan, giving the Carolina rapper some pretty high praise. “I'm more of a J. Cole fan. I think he is probably the greatest lyricist of this era. He's my personal favorite, you know, of all the cats.”
However, while he was disappointed in Cole's apology, he understood why he might have chosen to bow out given the times we live in. “Where I'm from; I'm from I said what I said, so if I said it, I meant it, and that's it.” He continued, “But today is a different day, man. You live in a world where people get canceled for some of the dumbest s–t, so I can't be upset with him for saying, “I take it back,” because the world is different. People are extremely sensitive and very emotional right now. People are built differently today.”
