The 2025 Grammy Awards nominees have been announced and, as always, there are a host of chart-topping hits and acclaimed artists who have been snubbed, from Dua Lipa to Ariana Grande, Vampire Weekend, Jack Antonoff, Megan Thee Stallion and more . .
The 67th Grammy Awards, taking place on February 2, 2025, will honor music released between September 16, 2023 and August 30, 2024. Beyoncé leads the charge with nominations (having earned 11 by cowboy carter), followed by artists like Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone, Charli XCX and more, but the Recording Academy has left out many deserving artists. Read on to see the most surprising snubs from this year's nominations.
Heavyweight Pop Omissions
Notably absent from the list of heavy-hitting pop nominees is 2019's winner for Best New Artist: Dua Lipa. He released his third album, radical optimismlast May, preceded by singles like “Houdini” and “Illusion,” but this year it was completely excluded from nominations and received none.
Considering Dua Lipa has been nominated for 10 Grammy Awards since 2019 alone, her omission is a little surprising, but not huge. radical optimism It came at a time when pop music was experiencing a new wave of energy, led by artists like Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX and others. Therefore, there is now a little less room for Lipa and other traditional pop groups, such as Ariana Grandewho received the award for Best Pop Vocal Album for his latest album, eternal sunbut it was omitted from all major categories.
Producer snubs
Perhaps the most surprising snub of all is that of Jack Antonoffwho has won the Producer of the Year award the last three years in a row. This time, he still has producer credits on some of the biggest albums of the year, like Taylor Swift's. The Department of Tortured Poets and Sabrina Carpenter short and sweet – but was omitted entirely from the Producer of the Year category. Now, their only chance to take home an award in 2025 is if Swift or Carpenter win in any category where their production contributions are recognized (like Song of the Year, Record of the Year, or Album of the Year).
In addition, chef — the inventive producer who executive produced Charli XCX's landmark album, GOLF CLUB – is in a similar boat. He could take home awards if Charli wins in any of the aforementioned categories, but he was snubbed from a well-deserved nomination for Producer of the Year.
Hip-Hop, rock, country, international and more unrecognized
In the 2025 Grammys' genre-specific categories, many deserving artists were left out, including Megan Thee Stallion. Despite their new album, meganand her singles “Cobra,” “Hiss,” and “Boa,” Meg failed to be nominated, not even in specific hip-hop categories.
Also omitted from the hip-hop categories were artists such as vince staples and schoolboy qwho released albums this year. Staples dark times was named by Consequence as one of the best new albums of last May: ScHoolboy's BLUE LIPS received the same recognition when it debuted in March.
On the rock face, One more time…the greatest effort to return blink-182 which has anchored his recent tour, was not nominated. It wasn't either vampire weekend's Only God was above uswhich appropriately could have been nominated for Album of the Year, but was completely ignored.
As for country music, the Recording Academy has embraced the genre's changing demographics, nominating Beyoncé in every country category and recognizing other relative newcomers to the scene, like Post Malone. As laudable as that step away from the good ol' boys of Nashville is, there were still snubs to worthy acts, such as Simpsonwho is the album? Desir Passage He did not receive any nominations.
There have also been some major snubs in country music from other countries. Like last year, K-Pop is underrepresented on the nominee list, although it's worth mentioning that fewer compelling K-Pop releases arrived last year, especially in the absence of major acts like Blackpink and BTS.
Meanwhile, the Best African Music Performance category, which was introduced just last year, appears to be experiencing some growing problems. Although South African amapiano star Tyla won the inaugural award in the category last year, this year's nominees come solely from Nigeria. While it is true that Lagos has been a major hub for the Afrobeats sound, there are many deserving acts and subgenres from across Africa that also deserve recognition and were instead snubbed. Perhaps this is a sign that a single category for an entire continent of exciting music is insufficient.
Overlooked successes
Beyond the main genres and categories, there are also a number of absolutely popular songs that you've probably heard on the radio, but that won't be recognized on the Grammy stage.
For example, Hozier's “Too Sweet” marked her biggest song since 2014’s “Take Me to Church,” but it was not nominated in any category. Neither were hits like “One of Your Girls” by Troy Sivan“Losing control” Teddy nothingand “Beautiful Things” Benson Boonealthough Swims and Boone each earned nominations for Best New Artist.
