BLACKPINK's ROSÉ explores deep personal feelings on her upcoming debut album, rosé.
In a candid interview with PAPER magazineROSÉ (born Roseanne Park) has shared how reading hateful comments inspired one of the album's hardest tracks, a song she describes as “disgustingly vulnerable.”
The New Zealand-born, Australian-raised singer admitted she has a habit of viciously scrolling at night, which has led to holes of “bad comments going into my head”.
“I realized how vulnerable and addicted I was to it [online] people and this longing to feel loved and understood,” she explained, adding that the experience prompted her to explore her own insecurities.
“It's so sickeningly vulnerable and honest that people are learning that I'm a person who goes through these feelings, and I hated that about myself,” she said of a new track.
She admitted that, despite her efforts to appear unfazed, the criticism is taking a toll on her. “If anything, it's something I want to cover. Even in interviews, nothing bothers me, you know? But it does. Every word, every comment, crushes me,” he confessed.
While rosé delves into the emotional toll of fame, it also draws from her own life, exploring relationships and difficult connections she's navigated.
“I think I'm pretty grateful that I've been through a few relationships, you know, like a normal girl in her 20s,” ROSÉ shared. “I'm probably very relatable if you listen to my songs and if anyone has that kind of relationship. It doesn't even have to be about a boy, just any kind of toxic relationship.”
“At the end of the day, I want people to understand me and stop misunderstanding me as a person as well,” he told the publication at another point in the interview. “I'm ready to be a little more vulnerable and open and honest so people don't misunderstand and take me for who I am.”
Leading the way with the album's debut single, “APT.”, a collaboration with Bruno Mars, ROSÉ is already setting records. The track held the No. 1 spot on both the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. US Charts for two consecutive weeks, marking the first time a song has surpassed 200 million streams worldwide in multiple weeks since surveys began in 2020.
Her chart success extends beyond the US to Australia, “APT”. debuted at No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart, making ROSÉ the first solo female K-pop artist to reach the top spot.
The single held the top spot for a second week, setting another milestone as the longest-running No. 1 on the charts by a Korean solo artist since PSY's “Gangnam Style” in 2012.
In the UK, “APT.” has also gained a lot of traction, currently sitting at its No.2 spot Official Singles Chart.
rosé is set for release on December 6 via The Black Label and Atlantic Records.
