In a raw moment of exasperation, Bob Sinclar took to social media to lament how smartphone use has eroded the personal connection cultivated by live shows.
The French electronic music icon recorded a video message following a recent performance at a club in Mykonos, which he highlighted as a “beautiful place.” He assumed the energy and atmosphere of the show would be lively.
Sinclar said his expectations were dashed when he found that most of the attendees on the dance floor remained frozen in place, “completely dead” while recording on their smartphones.
“I'm very depressed,” Sinclar said, noting that the crowd remained quiet behind their phones even as he played his many generational dance hits, such as the timeless “Love Generation.” “It was the worst concert of my entire career,” he added.

All hope was not lost, however, as Sinclar returned to Instagram days later to thank his fans in Cannes for joining him during a particularly exuberant outing at the Bâoli club. Sometimes all we need is a wake-up call.
Sinclar is one of many influential DJs lamenting the recent rise in smartphone use and its impact on the authenticity of club culture. Anyma, Damian Lazarus, Wavedash and the collaborative duo of James Hype and MEDUZA have advocated for digital detox efforts in nightlife, among others. Miami's iconic Club Space also implemented its first no-phone policy for a 24-hour party in June.
