“Once I got into what I was looking for, the song came together organically,” says Collins. “I used to have [the band] Lettuce records a live version of a groove we used to open the show with [‘Ahh… The Name is Bootsy, Baby’]. I kept listening to it and it felt so good I felt like I was on stage in the seventies. I thought, 'Nah, this should go on a Bootsy Rubber Band album.' So I re-recorded it once again with an emphasis on hip-hop and funk.
“The idea of the song was to acknowledge that funk is universal today and so are people,” he continues. “The Power of 'The One' [Collins’ term for funk’s rhythmic thrust] it gave me the courage and honor to bestow upon all the Funkateers this highest honor by awarding each one 'album of the Year'. After all, what vitamin do you need to take to be a Funkateer? B-1.”
Like the previously released track “The Influencers”, the song sets the mood #1 Funkeer album of the Year. The LP's 17 songs feature Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, Ice Cube, Musiq Soulchild and former Eurythmics member Dave Stewart. “Most of these artists grew up with my music, so they understand what my music and presence means to a people who are hungry for great talent and guidance,” says Collins. “At the end of the day, they're each still present in what they're doing, so not only do we like each other for what we do, but we respect each other for who we are in this world.”
This sentiment also translates into the overall message of the album, in which Collins calls for unity and hope. “I really wanted to take people's minds off all the hatred and animosity towards each other,” he says. “I wanted to give them something that made them smile even for a moment. If we could have more cookouts than shootings, that would be part of the 'change will come' that Sam Cooke was talking about.”
