New track, featuring Amelia Barratt on lead vocals, features the up and coming Roxy Music singer Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023
Bryan Ferry has shared his first original song in nearly a decade with “Star,” a collaboration with singer Amelia Barratt and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
The track, which appears on the Roxy Music singer's upcoming five-disc Retrospective: Selected Recordingsstarted as a demo that the NIN duo sent to Ferry, who in turn teamed up with Barratt to turn the sketch into “Star”, with Barrett handling lead vocals on the track:
“A few years ago I helped [Barratt] record an audiobook here in my studio. I was very impressed with her writing and this is the first song we did together,” Ferry added in a statement. “I'm very excited about this new job – there's a lot more to come.”
While Ferry has sporadically released new music over the past few decades, it's usually either in the form of remastered classics from the Roxy Music catalog and his solos (such as the instrumental The Jazz Age in 2012 and Bittersweet in 2018) or album covers like his Dylanesque; an unreleased reissue of Bob Dylan's “She Belongs to Me” also appears on Retrospective: Selected Recordings.
However, “Star” marks Ferry's first new original music since his 2014 LP Avonmore.
Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023 is divided into five discs highlighting different stages of Ferry's career: “The Best of Bryan Ferry”, “Compositions”, “Interpretations”, “Rare and Unreleased” and “Selected Recordings 1973-2023”. Each record will explore different aspects and eras of Ferry's work, from B-sides and perspectives to a focus on his ability to span genres and push the boundaries of songwriting.
