Credit the Swamp Princess for pioneering a new genre.
On Friday, Doechii released her new single 'Alter Ego' featuring City Girls' JT and with it, she introduces a new style of Eurodance-inspired rap coined as 'editorial rap'.
“I'm accidentally creating my own genre with this. This record doesn't sound like anything right now,” Doechii said of the song. “I'm so excited for you to experience this song, this visual, and this ERA with me!”
“When they ask you, tell them it's editorial rap: if hip-hop and house music had a baby,” Doechii added.
JT and Doechii have been teasing the track for weeks and even did an interview together Magazine Interview. “When you sent me the record, girl, I was like, 'What the hell? Does he think I can do a song like that?' JT said. “But thank you for challenging me. I'm very hesitant when I make music. I am a perfectionist. I want it to sound good when I send it back.”
“You killed it… There were a lot of names thrown out, but I said, 'No. JT.' Why are you balancing it,” Doechii replied. “It's something about your essence and energy. You literally made me love this song all over again.”
Doechi teased the single while opening for Doja Cat on The Scarlet tour last year.
“Alter Ego” marks Doechii's first release of 2024, having released tracks like “Pacer,” “Booty Drip” and “Universal Swamp Anthem” last year. As for JT, the City Girls rapper released her solo single “Sideways” this year, following Kali Uchis' involvement in “Muñekita” last year.
Doechii was named one of Rolling rock's Future 25 last summer. “I want to do everything,” he said Rolling rock at that time. “I want to try everything in music until I get sick of it and I want to move on to something else. So I'll do anything. It could go from classical to Afrobeats to whatever the hell. Maybe I'll make a genre, I don't know.'
