Camila Cabello made her long-awaited return to the MTV Video Music Awards stage on Wednesday (September 11).
On the heels of her delivery C,XOXO (Magic City Edition) deluxe earlier in September, Cabello has entered a new era as she trades blonde hair for her natural brunette locks. Along with taking a leap to the dark side, the Fifth Harmony alum sneaks in a shortened version of “June Gloom” to serve as the brooding intro leading into her heart-pounding rendition of “Godspeed.”
Wearing a ripped white dress and strappy heels, the singer entered a glass case along with her camera mounted on a tripod and a laptop which she eventually broke in frustration. She worked the camera and came up close to sing directly to the millions watching at home.
The 27-year-old jumped out and showed off the climbing octaves of her impressive mezzo-soprano vocal range, saying goodbye to a toxic ex-lover. He is then surrounded by a group of mystery dancers to bring the show to the finish line.
Bulletin board caught up with the singer on the red carpet before the show, where she described how she's cutting ties with everything that doesn't bring her positivity.
“I'm in the 'Godspeed' era and that song is a lot about letting go of what doesn't serve you. So I'm kind of holding a funeral today for everything that's negative, everything that doesn't serve me,” he explained. “Death to negative things, death to people and situations that try to bring you down.”
C, XOXO was released in June via Geffen Records with assists from Playboi Carti, Lil Nas X, JT and Yung Miami, BLP Kosher and Drake. The LP peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard 200.
