Chance the Rapper just dropped a major update on his upcoming release, Star Lineand it's the news fans have been waiting for.
In a recent conversation with album-star-line” rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank”>Complexthe Chicago native revealed that the studio's next project is about 83 percent complete, bringing us one step closer to hearing what it works.
At first, Chance estimated the collection was 85 percent complete, but he quickly adjusted his estimate.
“That's a bit generous. I say 83. 83.5, 82.7, you know what I'm saying? We're living in the project right now,” he joked, giving fans a glimpse into his creative process.
Reflecting on the journey since his debut album The Big Day (2019) to Star LineChance shared how different that experience was.
“For my last project, I had just gotten married, had just had a baby, and was ready to part with my management. Like, I had so much stuff. Now, it's not like there's not a lot going on, but I can really enjoy the creative process and be 100 percent myself.”
Star Line draws inspiration from Marcus Garvey's background Black Star Linea shipping company that aimed to connect the global black diaspora in the early 1900s.
Chance elaborated on this during a 2022 interview with Power.
“He started and ran this very important, integrated shipping line. He had a fleet of ships, these giant ocean liners the size of cruise ships, that he owned and financed with ordinary black people's money.”
Garvey's vision of Black global connectedness resonates deeply with Chance, who aims to channel that spirit into his music. “When I think about it Black Star Line and in all places where he was, the black star [on the line’s flag] is [also] the representation of Ghana, in their flag, in the fabric of how their country was created,” he said.
“They believe in global blackness, black connectedness and a free Africa.”
Although the album was originally slated for a Spring 2024 release, Chance has yet to confirm a new date.
To keep fans engaged, he released “Together,” produced by DJ Premier, in May and “Buried Alive” in April, a track that touches on his recent divorce and legal battles with his former manager.
In Buried alive, Chance gets real with lines like, “Where's his money now? Where is his wife?/ Where is his manager? Where's his hype?/ Then they threw dirt on the coffin, showing his raw, introspective side.
Earlier this year, Chance posted an IG Reel of “Buried Alive,” asking fans if he should drop a video. The clips he shares from his new direction have a darker tone, with black backgrounds and white subtitles, referencing the drama he's been dealing with since The Big Day.
“I'm really able to enjoy the creative process and put everything into it and be 100 percent myself and present in the now,” she said.
