Charles Cross, the famous music writer who wrote books about Nirvana and Jimi Hendrix, and editor of the influential Seattle magazine The Rocket, died on Friday, August 9.
“We are saddened to share that Charles Cross has passed away,” his family said in a statement. “He died peacefully of natural causes in his sleep on August 9, 2024. We are all heartbroken and trying to get through this difficult process of dealing with next steps.”
Cross has written nine books, including three New York Times bestsellers Heavier Than Heaven: The Biography of Kurt Cobainwhich won the 2002 ASCAP Award for Outstanding Biography. Three years later, Cross published his bestselling Hendrix biography in 2005 A room full of mirrorspraised by Vibe magazine as one of the best books about music.
His works include the 2012 book with Ann and Nancy Wilson of Rock And Roll Hall of Famers Heart, Kicking & Daydreamingalso a Times bestseller.
A prolific magazine writer, Cross was a founding editor of Backstreets, Bruce Springsteen magazine, “plus a few other short-lived left-wing Northwest magazines,” he quips in his bio.
Cross rose through the ranks in the 1980s, becoming editor of The Rocket in 1982, managing editor in 1986, and editor that same year.
