Ethel Cain gave a dramatic rendition of Jackie DeShannon and Kim Carnes' tribute to old Hollywood, “Bette Davis Eyes” during a concert in Paris on Monday. While her band played the music with hushed reserve, Cain turned barefoot in red gym shorts and a white T-shirt as she sang about Greta Garbo's “Harlow gold” and “standoff sighs.” The audience at the Trianon ate it up, clapping with her in concert at the end of the tune.
Cain is seemingly promoting her debut album, Preacher's daughterbut she is performing unreleased songs on her European tour, according to Solidified milk. these include “Dust Bowl,” “Amber Waves”, and “Punish.”
Cain spoke to me Rolling rock last year, discussing her anxiety about performing live — just days after collapsing on stage at the Sydney Opera House. “I don't like to play,” he said. “Maybe someday, if I can figure out a way that I can perform, that's better for me, but the standard setting of 'Go out, you're in front of a bunch of people' — I don't like being in front of a bunch of people . I don't like being the center of attention 100 percent.”
In the same article, he also outlined the direction he hoped to take next Preacher's daughter, describing it as dark and cold. The narrative will be about Cain's mother and she plans to make a third album about her grandmother. “This will be 15, 20 years from now,” he said. “I work very late. That is how I like it”.
