We didn't ask for it, but another cable-like streaming package is coming.
Comcast chief Brian Roberts has announced a new three-way bundle with Peacock, Netflix and Apple TV+ that comes at a discounted price.
Speaking Tuesday at the MoffettNathanson 2024 Media, Internet and Communications Conference in New York, Roberts said the new bundle will be called the StreamSaver bundle and will be available to all Comcast broadband and TV customers.
Without divulging too many details, Roberts said that Peacock, Netflix and Apple TV+ “will be priced significantly lower than anything on the market today.”
According to Roberts, the goal of this new package is to “add value to consumers” and, at the same time, “take some of the dollars out of” the other streaming companies' businesses.
“We've been combining video successfully and creatively for 60 years, and so this is the latest iteration of that,” said Roberts. “I think this is going to be a pretty exciting package.”
Social media says the package is basically cable TV
The reception of the new package is not met with the enthusiasm that Roberts had hoped for. Most users on X, formerly Twitter, basically say it's just cable TV, which many have cut the cord for, replacing it with streaming platforms.
“Let me go ahead and get a landline,” a person at X he wrote in response in the announcement.
Other the user wrote, “Cable is back baby! (Without the same residuals for actors though).
One user pointed out that this move could be out of desperation because streamers aren't making as much money as they used to.
“Everything folds. In isolation, each business model cannot be sustained. When you see mergers like this happening, it's because it's bleeding money. They merge not to become a superpower but to save each other.” read the post on X.
Well.
