A new artistic chapter in the history of Covex is unfolding.
The esteemed producer rushes towards 2024 by revealing fragments of RANGE, their long-awaited second album. Released on May 16 through the renowned record labelBusca Blue, the project is shaping up to be her best work to date.
After making waves with “Power,” a brilliant blend of garage production and Yianna's aching vocals, Covex has now teamed up with Fi Sullivan for “Another Night.” Out now, the stunning track combines indie-pop whimsy with upbeat sound design with fun production and a powerful lead line from Sullivan. Nostalgic and dancefloor ready, it beautifully sets the stage for his album release.
EDM.com We sat down with Covex to talk about the creative and collaborative process of “Another Night,” lessons learned from his next project, his plans for 2024, and more.
EDM.com: Your collaboration with Fi Sullivan on “Another Night” seems to have been an incredibly efficient and fruitful process. Can you explain how the lyrics and melody came together in just one day and how Sullivan's voice added that special touch to the song?
Covex: Fi and I have been friends for about five years and ever since I saw her live, I knew she had something powerful about her voice and lyrics. We toyed with the idea of doing a song together for a long time, but it wasn't until I made the instrumental for “Another Night” that I knew she would be a perfect fit.
Fi came to my home studio in the summer of 2023, I showed him some ideas, but “Another Night” was the one that stood out the most. We agreed that we wanted to make a dance song but one that was sweet and happy. It was one of those magical sessions where things flowed very naturally. She would come up with a line and then I would immediately follow her with another. The process was quick and fluid. Her voice has so much emotion and soul. Without her on this track, it wouldn't be the same.

EDM.com: “Another Night” combines elements of indie-pop and dance music in a surprising way, a combination of sounds that are not foreign to you. How do you navigate the creative space between these genres?
Covex: I rarely go into making music with the intention of combining genres. With this song, in particular, I started by testing my fingers by tracing the strings of my upright piano. I created a dense bed of ambiance and natural sound, then started playing around with a lead sound using one of Ableton's Max For Live devices, and finally filled it all in with a powerful bassline. I think what makes it a combination of those genres is the use of natural and synthetic sounds.
EDM.com: “Another Night” sets the stage for what promises to be a standout year for you. Can you give our readers a preview of what they can expect from your next album?
Covex: my second album RANGE continues the story of my previous EPs, Solis and moon. The album is a story about the human experience and the duality of life.
It is divided into two discs; the first is a happier, brighter and more optimistic face that I will continue to call Solis (similar to the sun) and the second is a darker, heavier and more emotional side called moon (similar to the moon). When creating the EPs, she knew he wanted them to be part of a larger work. It's a story I've wanted to tell for many years and it's my favorite project I've ever done.
EDM.com: Could you share the most important lesson you learned when creating “Another Night” or the entire album in general?
Covex: It's impossible to know when a song is finished, but there's usually a feeling you have on the first day of creating the idea, a very emotional feeling. It is important to save that moment of the song and not “edit” it.
EDM.com: If you had to describe the album in three words, what would they be?
Covex: Duality, Sun and Moon.
EDM.com: Your debut album A change of perspective was released in 2021. How does your approach to producing and conceptualizing this upcoming album differ from your debut, and what growth do you think it represents in your musical journey?
Covex: my debut A change of perspective and my next RANGE They have many similarities. The music I've made and continue to make doesn't necessarily fit into one box. Some days I love making beautiful, ethereal music and other days I'm excited to try a new bass sound design technique.
It has always been like this. I get bored easily trying to “adapt” to a certain sound or emotion. In creation RANGEI wanted to show both sides of those sounds and feelings by separating the album into two distinct pieces.
I learned a lot about myself over the three years of creating this, both artistically and personally. I experienced some monster highs and the lowest lows, which can be felt and heard on this album. This album gave me a new sense of purpose and confidence. I am incredibly proud of this work.
