Cynthia Erivo is doing a lot of press promoting her series as Elphaba Bad. And in addition to always appearing in interviews wearing an outrageously wild outfit, the singer/actress also has her signature long, lacquered nails.
Which brings us to this week's episode of Dax Shepard's Special armchair podcast, in which the actor asked Erivo the one question he thought everyone was dying to ask, but only he was clueless enough to throw out there: how do you mop with those long fingernails?
“Can I see your hands?” Sheppard asked Erivo. “I couldn't tell if your nails were that long or if you were wearing some kind of hand.” Once Erivo assured him that there was nothing wrong with her hands and that she naturally has “very long fingers” and that her nails just happen to be “very long” at the moment. Friends games star wondered if he could ask a “really crazy question [that’s] unsuitable.”
“Go on,” Erivo told him.
“When you wipe your butt…” he began as Erivo chuckled, “I knew you'd ask that question.”
“Everybody's afraid to ask,” Sheppard replied. “No, no one is afraid to ask!” Erivo replied. “Everyone asks this question and my answer is that no one uses just their fingers to wipe their back. You're using a tissue, right? And you sweep!”
“I guess my question is does the tissue go to the tip of the fingernails or are you trying to get the tissue…” Shepard asked, delving into the toilet habits of the Oscar-nominated actress to become an EGOT Winner.
“Fingers,” Erivo confirmed.
“Great, great, great, we're getting somewhere,” replied a somewhat embarrassed Shepard as he tried to get things back on track before his baser instincts kicked in once more. “And then you just feel a little tickle from the nails in the crack of your butt sometimes?”
Erivo once again promised him that wasn't the case because the tissue is at work, which led to Shepard — who said in 2021 that he and wife Kristen Bell sometimes don't bathe their daughters because “five, six days— suggesting that if he had such terrible nails, he'd wrap his entire hand in TP to make a sort of bath “glove.”
Showing remarkable patience, Erivo explained: “I pass.” Saying she wasn't offended by the question, but rather “annoyed,” she added, “I get it, but also, I'm a functioning adult and I've never walked around smelling… you know… Here's the thing, there are people who don't have fingernails who have to check how they are wiped.”
The first part of it Bad opens in theaters on Friday (November 22).
