Darius Rucker is speaking out about his February arrest, which found the country star facing two misdemeanor charges related to an alleged drug possession incident more than a year ago.
While promoting his new memoir The life is too short on TODAY On Tuesday (May 28), Rucker recounted how he was first drawn to Tennessee in 2023 while helping a moving friend who had asked the musician to “get some stuff.” According to the 'Wagon Wheel' singer, the officer who pulled him over at the time allegedly discovered he had drugs in the vehicle with him, but let him off the hook.
“The crazy thing was that they let me go,” the Hootie & the Blowfish frontman said during his interview on the long-running NBC morning show. “It was a year later that I got a phone call saying there was a warrant out for my arrest. I came down, we handled it, my lawyers are taking care of it. It is what it is.”
Rucker did not reveal more details about the Williamson County case against him, but confirmed that charges are still pending.
The interview comes about four months after news broke that Rucker had been arrested and was facing two counts of simple possession and casual exchange of a controlled substance, along with a third misdemeanor count for having expired tags on his vehicle. At the time, his attorney, Mark Puryear, said in a statement to Advertising sign that the singer was “cooperating fully with authorities related to misdemeanor charges.”
In another recent interview with People, Rucker expressed that he is still confused by the one-year wait between when he was actually pulled over and when he was arrested. “My friends who were at the police station said, 'Have you pissed someone off here? Because it's crazy that they're doing this a year later,” he told the publication. “But I think someone wanted to make an example of me and they did. And I'm handling it with my lawyers and I'm paying the price and we're going to get on with our lives.”
