Darren Criss and Helen J Shen Head to Broadway to Star in Musical Maybe happy ending. The couple sits down to discuss what it's like to work together, how they landed the roles, the beauty of musicals, and more!
Darren Criss:
This is a fun little backdrop, because before we were like in the trailers. We've done performances for audiences more than 20 times, I think, or something like that. This is what we met for…
Helen J Shen:
Probably 48 hours, less.
Darren Criss:
Yes, just a couple, yes. This is, this is so proto-what we are now. The show looks very different from this one. Not me, none of us have the wig on, but I think the heart is there, I guess. So I don't want to derail it too much.
Rebeca Milzoff: The heart and the plant.
Darren Criss: The most important thing is the main star of our show. He couldn't come today. He's already on the private yacht. Yes, he's partying on a yacht somewhere.
We'll give Hua Boon her moment later, I feel like the show is easy to explain, but also defies description in many ways. I'd love to know when you're giving your introductory speech to friends and people considering coming. How do you describe it? Maybe happy ending?
Darren Criss: There's the story and then there's the theme of the show. Those are not necessarily the same things. Thematically it's about, yes, two elderly people in hospice who decide to get out of the situation and connect with their family. That's a really bleak and depressing build for a show. So why would you want to see a musical comedy about that?
Keep watching for more!
