DJ Mister Cee, born Calvin LeBrun, died. He was 57.
“We've lost the iconic Mister Cee,” wrote Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg on X, formerly Twitter. “I heard him yesterday and I'm in complete shock. He was a dear friend to us all, a wonderful person and one of the most influential and impressive DJs of all time. I love you Cee.”
The loss is heavy on Hip-Hop culture. Born in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, in the late 80s, Mister Cee rose to fame as a DJ for Big Daddy Kane, whom he met in high school. As part of the Juice Crew, Cee was there on Kane's seminal debut album Long Live The Kane, with a song called “Mister Cee's Master Plan” featuring his expert cutting and scratching throughout the album.
But perhaps even more notable is that Cee is credited with discovering late, big time rapper Notorious BIG Cee was one of the first to sign the then local rap phenomenon before appearing on The source Unsigned Hype section of the magazine.
Later in his career, Cee would shine on the radio at New York's hip-hop station Hot 97, where he was billed as The Finisher, and on the party scene. After several arrests for soliciting transgender prostitutes, Mr. Xi's personal life will be embroiled in controversy. Although he denied being gay, he admitted that he had an affinity for seeking oral sex from transgender women.
No cause of death has been reported at this time.
Rest in peace DJ Mister Cee.
