I was torn when clips from Drake's new Sexyy Red feature started appearing on X (formerly Twitter) last night. Is this the song he chooses to break his silence with? Was that really him rapping on “BBL Drizzy”? Well, it couldn't be. Not after Kendrick called him “the colonizer,” not after Kendrick spit those bars about the two rappers for “euphoria.” In fact, some felt that he should distance himself from Sexy. The block is still too hot, they would say. But the more I thought about it and the more I listened to “U My Everything” just dropped, the more I now think it was a smart move on his part.
Why not get in on the joke? This is a classic Drake move if you've followed his career. He was never really afraid to poke fun at himself. It has been republished memes of himself and mocked his background SNL. Why not stay relevant while still showing love to one of his favorite young artists? Partnerships work both ways. There are times when I look at Drake as Larry David when he's riding certain waves, always mixing the hottest songs. But that's his MO, and he rocks the shorty, so why not go back to a song that's right in his wheelhouse — while still throwing subtitles and leaving the door open for more fights? This is rap music after all. Drake has no choice but to stand tall. And, not for nothing: That route is more interesting than waiting for Drake to come back with a song he hopes will top the Hot 100.
We knew a Sexyy Red feature was coming sooner or later. the two they have taken many pictures together, appeared on “Rich Baby Daddy”, he appeared on “Get it sexy” video, and have been at the center of fan theories about their connection to Gamma boss Larry Jackson. One person asked, “are you king drake for features?” to which she sarcastically replied, “yes.”
And I'll just say it: I like the song. I don't know what to tell you man. Sue me. “U My Everything” shows the Sexy Redhead at her most charming. The beat is entertaining and so is her hook. This is the type of chorus you find yourself randomly singing throughout the day. I'm willing to bet the Drake Stimmy check will go that high on the charts. There are too many factors at play. The St. Louis rapper is a chart-topper in her own right, with “Get It Sexyy” entering the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. Then there's the guy in Toronto who's built a house for himself on the charts. Why isn't this song charting? It's fire, and there was already discussion and lore around it right out of the passage.
This is clearly a calculated move by the Toronto MC. He refers to beef several times. First, he raps, “You know the time we start when my n – like they start to hide and hood and st / As soon as this problem is solved, I'm going to librarian for you. I'm shutting this sh-t down.” Then there's the lines, “Maybe we'll go to St. Lucia, I've been there, so I'll introduce you/ Or maybe you'll go to St. Martin with me if these n—as give it a break and stop starting with me.”
But then the beat changes to “BBL Drizzy” and your ears perk up. You think you can't hear what you hear. Then he starts coming in with a machine gun: “BBL Drizzy, they want a new body, they ask me for it/ The last one, Jung, did it for free, because I sent him so long ago. ” (I Googled “jung bbl” and what do you know? Dr. Calvin Jung — @drjungmoney on Instagram – thrown away.)
Sometimes you just have to sit back and laugh. Drake is a smart guy. Gotta love it when a rapper leans into villainy like a pro wrestler. Drake tries to pull a Hollywood Hogan, the beloved institution turned heel. Can this backfire? Of course it can, but I still applaud it.
