According to Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes, the band “unlocked an unexpected box of curiosity and creativity” when they began making their 2023 album, Dance of DeathNow, the latest product of that newfound energy has arrived: “New Moon (Dark Phase),” a reimagined version of their 1984 song “New Moon On Monday.”
Released as a single ahead of the upcoming deluxe re-release of Dance of Death“New Moon (Dark Phase)” replaces the original’s twangy, ’80s synths with a more ethereal, modern arrangement, featuring contributions from former band member Andy Taylor. Throughout the song, vocalist Simon Le Bon carries the melody, gracefully sliding into his higher register in the verses and delivering the catchy chorus refrain.

Speaking about the release in a new statement, Rhodes explained that the inspiration came with Dance of Death “Somehow it still lingered,” prompting the band to return to the studio to record even more. “I loved the idea of expanding the collection, because we could do that,” he said. “Why not add some of the songs we initially considered now that we had the luxury of a little more time?”
From there, Duran Duran recorded several additional tracks, including “New Moon (Dark Phase),” a cover of ELO’s “Evil Woman,” and a new instrumental titled “Masque of the Pink Death.” Additionally, the vinyl release of Luxury dance macabre will include four bonus tracks, none of which will be available elsewhere (something Rhodes likened to “justice for vinyl collectors”).
Luxury dance macabre The digital release is scheduled for October 11, and the physical release for October 25. Pre-orders are ongoing.
