Sir Elton John has become the 19th person to win an EGOT.
At this year's Emmy Awards, the 76-year-old musician completed the rare distinction by winning Best Variety Special for his 2022 Disney+ concert film. Elton John Live: Goodbye from Dodger Stadium.
Throughout his legendary career, John won six Grammy Awards, two Academy Awards, and a Tony Award. With tonight's Emmy win, John follows in the footsteps of legends such as Richard Rogers, Rita Moreno, Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks and Andrew Lloyd Webber to achieve EGOT status.
Before John, the most recent EGOT winners were John Legend (2018), Alan Menken (2020), Jennifer Hudson (2022), and Viola Davis (2023).
John did not attend tonight's Emmy Awards, but issued a statement following his win. “I am incredibly honored to join the incredibly talented group of EGOT winners tonight,” he said. “The journey to this point has been filled with passion, dedication and the unwavering support of my fans around the world. Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy they bring to all of our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful.”
