For Mark Foster's next trick, the Foster the People frontman made a three-headed remix of songs called “Houdini.” In an Instagram video posted on Tuesday (July 2), Foster explained, “okay, so there's like two Houdinis on the radio right now, one of Eminem, one of Dua Lipa, sitting at a keyboard in a recording studio.
“I thought it would be fun to bring our OG 'Houdini' from our first record and, you know, put all three of them together,” he said of beat-heavy track was the fifth single from Foster's 2011 debut album, Dades. Dua Lipa released her “Houdini” in November as her lead single Radical Optimism album, while Eminem released his self-titled song in May as a preview of his upcoming album The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)which is expected to be released on July 12.
Foster's remix video then cuts to the bandleader on a computer listening to Dua's song while playing keyboards and turning on the beat from his band's track as he mixes in some Slim Shady. “Better, right?” he said of the resulting mash-up which he renamed: “Houdini x Houdini x Houdini” aka “Battle of the Houdini”. He then introduced the final mix, with Dua singing over Foster's dynamic beat and Eminem rapping as Foster danced around the studio to the effect.
Eminem's “Houdini” reached No. 2 on the Billboard 100 singles chart, while Dua reached No. 11. Foster's OG reached No. 37 on the Billboard US alternative airplay chart.
