The Empire of the Sun's eight-year hiatus has officially ended with the dawn of a new era, 'Ask That God.' The duo share why the band broke up and then came back, the intimate themes of 'Ask That God,' their thoughts on Mac Miller sampling their music for “The Spins,” working with PNAU, and more.
Lucas Steele:
So it'll be on the next record. We'll put it out on Billboard.
Katie Bain:
Expressing it here.
Lucas Steele:
Yeah.
Katie Bain:
Start right here. It's okay.
Lucas Steele:
Paul McCartney, if you're listening, I've got some songs for you. Hi. We're Empire of the Sun and you're watching
Nick Littlemore:
Billboard News.
Katie Bain:
I'm really excited to have you here in the studio. Was it always inevitable that a new Empire of the Sun album would come out?
Lucas Steele:
It was a bit risky there.
Nick Littlemore:
No, it was always inevitable. As for when.
Lucas Steele:
Yeah I guess-
Nick Littlemore:
That is the question.
Katie Bain:
Well.
Nick Littlemore:
The empire will continue. It's not like there were other empires before us that collapsed. We will continue.
Katie Bain:
Of course. Why was this the right time?
Lucas Steele:
We've been working together for 20 years, over 20 years, so I think we had to get to that point where we said, enough is enough. I'm sick of you, Nick, go my own way. You know, we had to shut down all the computers. We had to shut everything down. And even though the pandemic was, you know, horrible for the band, I think it was a blessing because we were able to step away. You know, for 20 years we built this castle, and it was time for us to let go, to let go of the dream and let it all get covered in raids, and then come back again and realize what we loved so much about it in the first place.
Keep watching for more!
